Rubios was not happy with the out of the box solution provided by their ordering system by Olo. Our team was hands on building a middleware solution that will enable custom functionality across the board.

Problem
Rubio’s Coastal Grill faced several challenges with their existing online ordering system, which relied on Olo’s out-of-the-box solution. The default design was outdated and failed to align with Rubio’s brand identity, while the lack of customization options hindered the restaurant’s ability to offer essential features such as tipping, rewards, and gift card support. Additionally, the system struggled to accommodate Rubio’s diverse menu and complex customization options, which are crucial for a Mexican restaurant. Furthermore, the existing setup couldn’t adequately support multiple order types like delivery, takeaway, and dine-in, with poor location detection hampering the delivery system.
Solution Provided
To address these issues, we developed a comprehensive solution that leveraged Olo’s robust API while providing the customization Rubio’s required. We created a custom middleware application that interfaced with Olo and Punchh on the backend while connecting to a tailored frontend. WordPress was implemented as a backend system for menu customization, allowing Rubio’s staff to easily update menu items. To overcome the lack of image support in Olo’s system, we developed a custom Content Management System (CMS) integrated with the frontend. This solution addressed the design and functionality limitations and incorporated all the custom features and relevant APIs necessary to enhance the ordering experience for Rubio’s customers.
Results
Following the implementation of the custom middleware app, Rubio’s Coastal Grill experienced a remarkable uptick in both orders and revenue. Within six months of launching the new system, Rubio’s reported a 25% increase in online orders and a 15% rise in overall revenue. The enhanced user experience, combined with the introduction of new features like tipping and rewards, significantly improved customer engagement. Additionally, the successful integration of their diverse menu options led to a surge in customer satisfaction, further solidifying Rubio’s position in the competitive fast-casual dining market.
